
- 1. A breeder-member shall strive to conform to the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier Standard as approved by the Vereinigte Rassehunde-Azuchter e.V (DHS) to improve progeny, and to reduce faults to a minimum.
- 2. All dogs will be kept under safe and sanitary conditions, be given maximum health care and protection, including regular inoculations and proper nutrition. Proper socialization and temperament screening shall be implemented. Use of the Volhard Puppy Aptitude testing is strongly encouraged.
- 3. Any dogs used for breeding shall be screened to determine excellent health, found to be sound and fit for breeding, carrying no known infectious or congenital problems including but not limited to portosystemic shunt, Legg calve perthes, luxating patellas, heart defects, and collapsing trachea.
- 4. Female bred must be a minimum of 1 yr of age or second heat before first breeding. Females will be retired from breeding at 7 yrs of age maximum. Females weighing less than 5 lbs will not be bred under any circumstances. Healthy spacing between litters will be a priority and unspayed bitches will be protected from unplanned matings. Bitches will in no case be placed at risk by an unreasonable number of cesarean sections and then only with the concurrence of a veterinarian.
- 5. Stud service will be offered only by Full Registered, healthy, mature dogs and only of sound temperament. Stud service will be refused for any mating which is considered to not be in the best interest of the breed. Stud dogs will be retired at the age of 8 yrs maximum.
- 6. Members shall comply with the rules of the Club concerning record keeping and the registration, identification, sale, and transfer of dogs. Pedigrees of breeding dogs shall be submitted to the Club for identification. All dogs shall be identified with tattoo or microchip for identification. DNA testing is required on all dogs used for breeding.
- 7. Novice breeders shall seek out an experienced breeder for mentorship and attend/assist at a whelping before breeding. All breeders should have a good understanding of basic genetic science and be familiar with all health aspects, veterinary methods and procedures associated with whelping and care of a litter. Experienced breeders shall freely offer guidance and support to novice members.
- 8. Litters produced from a breeding of a Biewer Yorkshire Terrier to a standard color Yorkshire terrier shall be evaluated and use of the progeny of this litter in a breeding program shall be carefully monitored for a minimum of 3 succeeding generations. Only excellent examples of the purebred Yorkshire Terrier shall be incorporated for this purpose. All members will seek the approval of the board, who in return will submit this information for approval with the German Club. Any pups produced from this mating not used in a monitored breeding program shall be spay/neutered and placed as pets. Only correctly marked Biewer offspring shall be referred to as Biewer Yorkshire terriers.
- 9. Breeders will actively promote the priviledge of club membership in an approved breed club and require a mentoring agreement for placement of any intact dog released for breeding purposes. Breeders will suggest club membership to all Biewer owners.
- 10. Puppies will not be sold or consigned to pet stores, agents, or other commercial enterprises, puppies will not be marketed through a broker nor sold to disreputable breeders, and neither puppies nor stud services will be offered as prizes or for raffles.
- 11. Prospective buyers will be screened as thoroughly as possible to determine their intent, as well as their ability and interest in providing a safe, adequate, loving environment and a long term relationship with a puppy or adult dog.
- 12. All puppies and dogs offered for sale will be sold with written sales agreements to include clear terms and conditions and be signed by the seller/breeder and buyer. The contract will insist that the breeder be contacted in the event that at any time the owner is unable to keep the dog, it will be the obligation of the breeder to accept return of the dog and determine the future placement of the dog in question.
- 13. Purchasers will be required to neuter/spay all puppies sold as pets. Registration forms will only be released upon receipt of a veterinarian’s certification of such spaying or neutering.
- 14. All puppies leaving the breeders possession will be a minimum of ten (10) weeks of age with the optimum age for release set at twelve (12)weeks to facilitate adequate socialization as well as appropriate emotional and temperament development through interaction with siblings, dam and other dogs. Puppies will not be released without a current health certificate and proper inoculations.
- 15. Breeders will provide puppy buyers with written details of feeding, general care, date and types of inoculations, as well as dates of wormings, grooming instructions, etc. and be available to offer future advice as needed.
- 16. A breeder-member selling puppies or offering stud services shall fully disclose to potential clients any serious or disabling hereditary defects, including the reasonable possibility of such defects.
- 17. Members shall refer potential puppy purchasers to other reputable breeders and be helpful and courteous to those who request information about the breed.
- 18. Animals recently exposed to the risks of infectious diseases and bitches with nursing whelp will not be exhibited.
- 19. Breeder websites may be linked to the club site upon approval by the board. A member’s advertising:
- shall be professional in appearance and location
- shall not contain any misleading photograph or other graphic materials
- shall not use terms as “teacup”, “tinies”, doll faced, or similar terminology.
- 20. An exhibitor-member shall not alter a dog’s natural appearance. Biewer tails may not be docked. Removal of dew claws is suggested.
- 21. A member shall not defame another member nor seek to impair a member’s reputation, provided, however, a member shall report any serious situation that is detrimental to the breed or is inconsistent with these principles.
